KUALA LUMPUR -- The 1Malaysia Transit Home programme for newly-wed young couples will be expanded in stages to the big towns nationwide, the Dewan Negara was told Wednesday.
Deputy Minister of Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government, Datuk Halimah Mohd Sadique, said the decision was made based on the high demand for the houses in a pioneer project at the Pinggiran Bukit Jalil People's Housing Project (PPR), which would be ready for occupation next year.
She said the ministry, through the National Housing Department, would discuss with the state governments to determine the number of transit houses to be built, which included at the Sungai Melana PPR in Johor Baharu and Kepayan Ridge PPR in Kota Kinabalu.
She was responding to a question from Senator Chong Sin Woon who wanted to know whether the government would increase the number of transit houses for the newly-weds.
To a supplementary question from Senator Datuk Adam Abdul Hamid on the response by state governments in providing sites for transit housing projects, Halimah said there was no problem so far.
"There are PPR projects which have to be shifted to other locations because the soil at the site earmarked for the projects was not suitable and also cases where the change of the site was made by the state government," she added.
The 1Malaysia Transit Home Programme is implemented to ease the burden of newly-wed young couples with monthly income of RM3,000 and below. The monthly rental for the house is RM250.
