Construction sector expands 9.7pc in 4Q2014

KUALA LUMPUR: The construction sector recorded a 9.7 per cent year-on-year growth in the fourth quarter of 2014.
 
The Statistics Department said activities expanded by 7.1 per cent compared to the third quarter.
 
“The highest percentage share was contributed by construction of non-residential buildings sub-sector which recorded 34.6 per cent.
 
“This was followed by civil engineering sub-sector (30.6 per cent), residential buildings (29.7 per cent), and special trades (5.1 per cent) ,” it said Tuesday, ahead of the release of the fourth quarter GDP results last Thursday
 
Among other states, Selangor topped the highest value of construction work done at RM6.63 billion or 24.5 per cent.
 
This was followed by Johor with RM4.47 billion worth of construction work or 16.5 per cent, Federal Territory at RM4.27 billion (15.8 per cent), Sarawak at RM2.32 billion (8.6 per cent) and Penang, RM1.73 billion (6.4 per cent).
 
The contribution of these five states accounted for 71.8 per cent of the total value of construction work done.
 
In terms of construction activity by project owner, private sector continued to dominate with share of 70.0 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2014.
