Don't Just Depend On Federal Govt For Affordable Housing, Penang Government Told

GEORGE TOWN - Penang Umno Tuesday called on the DAP-led state government to try building some affordable houses for the people before blaming the federal government for all issues related to affordable housing.
Penang Umno Liaison Committee secretary Datuk Musa Sheikh Fadzir said the construction of affordable housing was a joint responsibility of both federal and state governments, and as the administrator of the state, the DAP-led Penang government should be the one to build affordable houses for the people.
"Don't just depend on the federal government for the construction of affordable houses under the 1Malaysia People's Housing (PR1MA) Project.
"The DAP-led Penang government has been questioning and finding fault with PR1MA, but what did they do?" he told reporters here Tuesday.
Musa also challenged the state government to show any affordable housing project completed under its administration in Penang, which has entered its seventh year.
"Before questioning the commitment of the federal government in building affordable house through PR1MA, please ask yourselves what have you done to provide affordable houses for the people in Penang. Don't simply find people's faults," he said.
Musa said this in response to the remarks by Penang Housing, Urban and Rural Planning Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo Tuesday, in which he questioned the commitment of PR1MA and the promises made by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak Tun Razak to build affordable houses in Penang.
"The state government has yet to receive any detailed information on the construction of affordable houses in three locations as announced by the federal government in 2012.
"We realise that this is the federal government's project under PR1MA for the people in Penang, but until today, the state government has not receive any application from PR1MA. We want to know when the project will be implemented?" Jagdeep said.
Jagdeep said the state government had also sent a letter questioning the federal government about the matter and was informed by Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Dr Shahidan Kasim that the project was still at the planning phase.
